A 32-year-old man was found dead on a pavement in Connaught Place’s Gole Market in the Capital on Monday due to heatstroke, claimed the Delhi Police.

According to police, the body was spotted near the lal Bahadur Sadan close to the popular market. “It is suspected that the man died of heat stroke. The exact cause of the death can be ascertained only from the post-mortem report,” a police official said. “The body will be sent for postmortem after 72 hours or on identification, whichever is earlier,” said a police official, adding an inquest under Section 174 CrPC has been initiated into the matter.

Rickshaw-pullers and other pavement dwellers in the area were questioned in this regard. From preliminary investigation, it appears that the deceased was homeless. “None of the other pavement dwellers knew him,” the official said. A senior district administration official said a report from police is awaited.

“No conclusion can be drawn at this stage,” he said.

Police recovered from deceased pocket a doctor’s prescription issued to one Kishore, however police said they are still figuring it out if the note belonged to him or any of his family members. “It could not be verified whether the deceased was actually him,” said a police officer privy to the investigation.

The image and details of the person will be uploaded on the site of the zonal integrated police network system and published in newspapers for verifying his identity.
