Clashes among two communities broke out on Sunday night in North-East Delhi’s Jafrabad area after the head of a slaughtered cow was found at the Ghond Chowk intersection. Heavy police presence was seen in the area to avert any violence. North-East district police mounted a vigil on the troublemongers to ensure that situation was brought under control.
According to police, the incident took place around 10 pm. The drama began after someone placed the head of the cow on the main road. Soon news of a cow being slaughtered spread and several members from the Hindu community came out and started protesting. They gathered at Ghonda Chowk and shouted slogans against the Muslims alleging they had butchered the bovine. The protesters claimed that the people from the Muslim community had purposely killed the cow as it is revered by the Hindus. Within minutes the situation escalated and the people from the Muslim community also gathered on the roads and shouted slogans. The police was informed. Senior officials of the district rushed to the spot to control the situation.
“No stone pelting took place and no one was injured in the incident. A case under Section 153 (promoting enmity between different groups on basis of religion), 495A and cruelty towards animals was registered. Police have seized the carcass of the slaughtered cow,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) RA Sanjeev. Police forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.
