Despite being a Head Constable, Amit Tomar enjoyed an unbridled run in the South-East district before the infamous shootout at Nehru Place where he along with his associates opened fire on a Crime Branch team. During
his interrogation, Tomar reportedly revealed facts that the call detail records (CDR) unit of South-East district was also run by him from his office at Nehru Place police post. After the infamous Arun Jaitley phone hack case, the then Commissioner of Police, Neeraj Kumar, had issued a standing order that CDR units will be stationed only in the district DCP’s office. Despite the order, the CDR unit of South East district was being flagrantly run by Tomar.
After the Nehru Place shootout, the unit was secretly shifted back to the DCP’s office. Now, the sleuths of Crime Branch have started probing whether Tomar was also involved in obtaining CDRs illegally for pecuniary benefit. Police sources said that the accused HC Tomar told investigators that he was posted with the special investigation team (SIT) of Crime Branch in Rohini, but after the transfer of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Joy Tirkey, he was called to the South-East district.
Tomar, who was drafted in a special police team of South East district under the then Additional DCP Joy Tirkey, was running his special team office with the arrested Sub-Inspector Nagendra Tomar, but went their separate ways. HC Tomar started running his office from the second floor of Nehru police post. “We were running the CDR unit section in our office and accessing CDR for other police personnel of the district as well,” police sources informed.
Earlier, any ACP-level officer could send emails to wheedle information on CDRs, but after the Jaitley CDR scandal, then Commissioner of Police had issued an order that CDR units be stationed only in the district DCP’s office and only with his permission could an investigator access CDR from the concerned telecom agency. However, even after the order, the CDR unit was operational from his office and following the Nehru Place incident, the unit was shifted to the DCP’s office in Sarita Vihar.
Investigators said that accused Amit Tomar had joined investigations on Thursday and arrived with his lawyer at Malviya Nagar office of the anti-robbery cell. Before arriving, he sent an email to the official mail ID of ACP, Inter State Cell, Satish Yadav and also made a PCR call. Amit Tomar was spearheading an extortion racket for the past decade and involved in wresting money from people by threatening to implicate them on trumped up charges.
