The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Delhi Police to explain the measures it has taken to prevent mishaps arising out of bikers' stunts on roads. In the wake of recent incidents, a PIl said, "Every year these anti-social elements go on a rampage on their bikes by over-speeding, performing stunts on roads and also harassing the general public."
The court asked the Centre, Delhi Government and Delhi Police to file a report detailing the steps to ensure public safety and curb hooliganism on roads. While issuing notices, the bench of Acting Chief Justice BD Ahmed and Justice Vibhu Bakhru said, "The police must file an affidavit explaining the measures they will adopt against bikers performing stunts," and fixed the next date of hearing on October 23.
The PIl, filed by retired Delhi University professor Hari Kishan Katyal, sought directions from court to the Delhi Police to submit a report on why they could not prevent bikers performing stunts in public places. Katyal, seeking stringent action against them, said that while the bikers thronged India Gate and caused complete chaos on roads recently, the police was a mute spectator. The plea identified other areas like Connaught Place, ITO Crossing, Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, Pragati Maidan, Sunder Nagar and adjoining areas.
