HC pulls rabbit out of helmet for women

The Delhi HC on Monday asked a petitioner, seeking a direction to make helmets mandatory for women riding two-wheelers, to file a fresh plea challenging the provision of the Delhi Motor Vehicle (DMV) rule which exempts them from wearing a headgear.

Justice Sudershan Kumar Misra, while disposing off the contempt plea, refused to initiate any contempt proceedings against the officers of the Transport Department and accepted the State Government’s affidavit which said “law exempting women two-wheeler riders from wearing helmets in would remain in force as any change is being objected to by Sikh women.” “The Court asked me to file a fresh plea before the bench challenging the provision of DMV rules,” said Ulhas PR, the petitioner. The Transport Department had told Court in an affidavit that the decision of not amending the law has been taken after considering the sensitivities of Sikhs. “The Court asked the department to provide me the detail about the date-wise meets held by the officers  and the decision taken by them,” said Ulhas, a docu-maker.
