Hard times for army personnel!

With private vehicles of armed personnel not being exempted from the odd-even scheme they are finding it difficult to comply with the formula being implemented in Delhi since January 1 on a trial basis for 15 days to clear city’s lungs.

Commuting in uniform with epaulettes and medals in the crowded public transport is making their journey to work quite cumbersome.

An official of lieutenant Colonel Rank said while the officers are welcoming and appreciating the positive step of the Government but there must be some other alternatives too. “We cannot rely much on public transportation. Our uniforms are different on days and accessories on uniforms are also different,” said the officer.

Some officers have tried bicycle route to go to office during their vacation period but the idea has not worked with unavailability of cycle lanes.

“During my trial, I have observed that city roads are not friendly for bicyclists. Traffic and population of vehicles on city roads do not allow to cyclists to pass easily. Driving a two-wheeler or cycle on city roads is risky too,” said the officer.

Officers who dress up every day in uniform with Army medals, badges and insignias are finding it difficult to cope with the situation.

The scheme — operational daily from 8 am to 8 pm except on Sundays — has many exceptions, including a string of VIPs, CNG-driven public transport, cars driven by women, two-wheelers, enforcements and emergency vehicles.
