The West district police has arrested a person who allegedly demanded Rs5 crore from a real estate owner, threatening him of eliminating his son. Acting swiftly, the police arrested the accused within 24 hours from the time of the incident. The victim Manjeet Singh Anand informed police on Sunday about the ransom calls by the accused men stating they would kill his son if he informed anyone.

“The accused has been identified as Vinit Makol, alias Vinnie (21). He has a cloth shop at his residence in Subhash Nagar. He also has a partnership in Hammer Club & lounge, Westgate Mall, Rajouri Garden.  His brother Sumit Makol also had partnership with the son of the victim at Aero Puerto lounge on NH-8. Prabjot, alias Angad, the victim’s son, is also the childhood friend of the accused. The cell phone used in the commission of crime has also been recovered by police,” said Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Ranvir Singh.

Anand informed police that he had been receiving threatening messages claiming his son would be polished off if he did not pay Rs5 crore in a week’s time. A case was registered at Rajouri Garden police station and a special team was prepared.

It was revealed that Anand had retired as a Captain from the Merchant Navy in 1990.  He was running a real estate business in Delhi as well as in DlF Gurgaon.  His son Angad had entered into a partnership with Sumit for running Aero Puerto. Both parties invested Rs40 lakh each in the club but Angad decided to withdraw the partnership.

During this period, Vinit Makol met another person, Sanjeev, alias Bobby who reportedly suffered a heavy loss waging bets in the IPl matches Vinit. Makol gave Rs40 lakh to Sanjeev for making a quick buck in hedging bets but suffered a heavy loss of Rs2 crore. Sanjeev and Vinit hatched a conspiracy to extort a large sum from Prabjot and sent ransom messages to his father Manjeet Singh Anand. Sanjeev is currently absconding.
