Gzb petrol pumps blow the lid off helmet debate

The Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association here on Thursday urged Uttar Pradesh Transport Commissioner to make buying helmets compulsory at the time of buying vehicles.

The suggestion came after the association’s refusal to comply with the Transport Commissioner’s order to refuse to refuel vehicles of those who did not wear helmets in two-wheelers and seatbelts in cars.In a representation to the District Magistrate, association president Jaivir Singh said police should enforce the Government order by effective checking on roads.

The association informed the District Magistrate that customers have threatened to challenge the Transport Commissioner’s order in court, terming it “beyond jurisdiction”.To end the stalemate between the District Administration and the Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association, Ghaziabad DM has issued new directives to police. In his diktat, the District Magistrate said a register would be kept at all gas stations and policemen on patrol duty would have to sign it. A senior officer would conduct surprise checks at stations.

The register would remain in the safe custody of petrol pump managers, stated the new guidelines.Earlier the Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association had refused to comply with Government orders in view of resistance from the staff.
