The Gurugram Traffic Police will soon be equipped with 100 body-worn video cameras to catch anti-social elements on vital roads of Gurugram like MG Road and Golf Course Road. The cameras are expected to enhance road safety for both the Traffic Police personnel and the residents of Gurugram.
According to a senior police officer, these are small and high definition video cameras attached to the policeman’s uniform to capture images and record audio of incidents and violations. Violators will be under the watch of cameras attached to policemen’s uniform and will be used against unruly elements.
The video cameras will soon be distributed to traffic police and patrolling teams while patrolling the popular area of the city like MG Road the stretch has 32 pubs and bars.
The video cameras have a two-inch front facing coloured screen and people can clearly see that they are being recorded. The device can record videos for up to 10 hours with date and time facility.
“We will soon equip traffic cops with smart body-worn cameras and soon start using the devices to catch violators as it came to our notice that some anti-social elements are caught by the traffic police under the influence of alcohol and later they allege that the cops have misbehaved with them”, Assistant Commissioner of Police (traffic), Pankhuri, said.
“The device will further improve transparency and help traffic policemen in reviewing the recording on the spot and show traffic violation to people as a part of educating people and raising awareness,” the ACP added.
MG Road is notorious as a hub for anti-social elements and criminals after sunset. Illegal activities, misbehaviour with police personnel and drunken behaviour are common at this busy commercial hub after 11 pm.
Recently on June 16, two girls were molested by some goons on MG road and again on June 19, a woman was allegedly abducted by three persons from the area and later gang-raped and thrown out from the car in Greater Noida.
Similarly, last month a traffic constable was hit by an unidentified car and in another incident, a sub-inspector was manhandled by two van drivers.
Earlier, the traffic police were given 15 cameras in November last year for better functioning and monitoring of traffic related issues but some of them are not functional now.
