Gurugram corporation to seize 500 ATMs for not paying service tax

The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) is planning to confiscate nearly 500 ATMs alleging that lead banks have not paid service charges for years. The city has nearly 1,300 functioning ATMs, nevertheless, approx 500 ATMs had been installed under the MCG area. The department officials have claimed that they have issued several notices to defaulters’ bank, which are not paying their charge to use network facilities.

According to the MCG, banks need to pay around Rs 5,000 each ATM to avail network facilities. In a rough calculation, the estimated amount would touch the figure in lakhs, which banks are supposed to pay on time but delaying due to certain reasons.

According to the bank officials, the MCG didn’t clarify that how much amount we have to pay as a service charge. The corporation has issued two notices to pay their service charge in 2013 and 2016, respectively.

“To run ATMs machine in any area banks have to install a tower via this ATMs received networks and money dispense from the machine,” an official with the MCG said.

“We have held meetings with the lead banks we also served them notices to pay their tower fees but still we have not received any payment from the banks.  If they don’t pay their service charges, we will seize the ATMs machine soon,” senior town planner of MCG Sudhir Chauhan said.
