The five-year-old rape victim from Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi, who was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on April 19, was discharged and taken to the YWCA hostel on Friday.

The doctors said that the girl was ‘alright’ and fit to be discharged. However, after she was discharged the family feared that the girl might feel desolated once again as entry of male members is restricted to the hostel.

“The girl was discharged in the afternoon. Doctors had a detailed deliberation on her over all improvement and then discharge was given. She was found alright and fit for discharge. The routine medicine has been given and accordingly child will have to come for the check-up. Reconstructive surgery to repair the private parts will be conducted in phased manner over a period of next two to three months,” said DK Sharma, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital.

Sharma said the girl is taking normal food and can talk. But she cannot pass urine or stool through natural process. “At the time of her admission in the institute, she had deep injuries on private parts but with due course of treatment they have shown good healing. We had to perform colostomy to create an artificial opening to the exterior of the abdomen for passing stool. She will continue this way until the reconstructive surgery is carried,” he added.

“She has been kept at the YWCA hostel with her mother. We have been asked to keep her there for another six month till the treatment is completed. They have said that she needs to be kept in a clean environment in order to protect any infection, ,” said the victim’s uncle.
