The residents of the South-East Delhi District are facing a serious threat of building collapse due to groundwater seepage. National Green Tribunal (NGT) will hear their case on October 14.
“The hearing of the case is postponed as we need to submit more technical details related to the rising groundwater in South -East Delhi areas to NGT,” said an official of the Central Board of Ground Water Board (CBGWB).
A hydrologist of (CBGWB) said the situation is worst in Okhla phase III. “Though the basements of their buildings are around 14 feet deep, but due to rising groundwater, people have to pump out the rising water,” said a hydrologist. Due to this problem, people are not able to use lift for the basements, he further added.
Jaideep, who has office in Okhla phase III, said, “In the basement areas, the level of ground water has risen up to 10 feet. Realising the situation, I have applied for three bore well connections. This is the only solution.”
Under these circumstances, the hydrologists have come to the conclusion that instead of using Delhi Jal Board (DJB) supply water, locals should use ground water. “During our laboratory tests, we have found that the quality of water is as good as it can be for drinking purposes,” said the hydrologists.
Due to ground water logging, some areas like Soniya Vihar and Okhla are at a serious threat.
