The Delhi Traffic Police on Sunday provided a green corridor between the Institute of liver and Biliary Sciences (IlBS) and Terminal-3 of Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport to ferry the ‘liver’ that was being brought for the transplant. The seamless green corridor helped in saving the life of a 48-year old man from economically-weaker section who was suffering from a liver disease.
An ambulance carrying liver of a 20-year-old brain dead woman was on Sunday rushed in less than 10 minutes via ‘green corridor’ for organ transplantation from a busy city area from the airport to the hospital. Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Muktesh Chander said, “Traffic Police provided the green corridor to facilitate the movement of the liver to the IlBS via Mahipalpur-Mehrauli road. Men and officers were deployed and they ensured that no time was lost in this process”.
IlBS spokesperson Dr Shantanu Dubey said the liver arrived at Delhi at 10.55 am on Sunday and was transported via the ‘green corridor’ from IGI Airport Terminal-3 to IlBS in 11 minutes with dedicated traffic police support.
“When the organ reached the hospital, the recipient patient was already taken to the operation theatre and surgery was conducted by Dr V Pamecha and his team of surgeons,” said the doctor.
“The recipient was a 48-year old man from economically- weaker section who was suffering from a liver disease of unknown cause known as cryptogenic cirrhosis and has been under treatment here, doctors said, adding that the procedure was carried out without any cost to the patient,” Dr Shiv Sarin, Director IlBS said.
It may be noted that it is the 20th case of cadaveric liver transplant at IlBS and the first deceased donation liver transplant in 2016.
