The Delhi Police Crime Branch claimed to have arrested the key member of Deepak Pandit gang who had gunned down a member —Rama Kant, alias Raju Baba — of their rival gang in South East Delhi’s Greater Kailash area in the wee hours on Sunday.
Deepak Pandit, along with his four associates, were nabbed following a chase by a police patrolling team, meanwhile the accused Anup Kumar Tiwari (28) managed to flee from the spot. Police said Tiwari has been arrested on Friday.
The incident took place around 1am on August 23 when Raju and his gang was standing near the Hanuman Mandir at ‘A’ Block when Deepak and his associates came there in Scorpio, which was driven by Anup Tiwari, and started abusing them. The verbal abuse soon turned into a scuffle and members of Deepak’s gang opened fire. Then they fled from the scene leaving Raju dead on the spot.
In the meantime, a police team patrolling in the area intercepted their Scorpio and arrested five of them but Tiwari ran from the spot. Tiwari, who is also a close relative of Sant Bhimanad alias Ichadhari Baba, was arrested in 2010 in a sex trade racket in Delhi. He is on bail.
During interrogation, Tiwari disclosed that he is a driver by profession and for five years he has been associated with gangster Deepak Pandit. He is very good at driving and used to give assistance to Deepak Pandit and his associates in escaping from a spot after committing any crime. Deepak Pandit had a feud with Raju Baba and his gang over the supremacy of drugging and betting rackets.
