Grandpa's celebratory firing kills 6-yr-old boy on Diwali

A six-year-old boy died after receiving a bullet injury — the shot accidentally fired by his grandfather, who was firing in the air celebrating Diwali with the child — at South-West Delhi’s Bindapur area, police said on Friday.

The 60-year-old grandfather, identified as Ram Kumar, rushed the child, Shivam, to a hospital, where he succumbed to the injury. The hospital authorities called up the police control room, said police.

“A case has been registered under Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and Kumar was arrested immediately,” said DCP (South-West) RA Sanjeev, adding that Kumar was later released on bail.

According to the police, the incident was reported around 10.45 pm when Kumar was firing in the air with his licensed revolver, which excited his six-year-old grandson.

Shivam was constantly pulling his grandfather’s arm to have a closer look at the gun, following which one of the bullets, meant to be fired on air, hit him near his chest. His body was handed over to relatives after post-mortem on Friday, police added.
