Two 17-year-old students on bike — who were returning home after writing their Physics examination at Government Intermediate College, Sector-12 — were crushed by a Noida Authority’s water tanker in Sector-12 Noida on Monday, according to police.  The driver of the water tanker has been arrested, said police, adding that the incident took place around 2.30 pm near ESI dispensary in Sector 12  and the two students have been identified as Vikash of Rahul Vihar, Ghaziabad and Aashish of Sorakh Village Noida.

Police said  Vikash stopped the bike near a medical store to buy medicines for his sister. As they left the shop to reach the main road, a speeding tanker hit their bike and crushed the duo under its wheels, said police, adding that the impact of the accident was so high that the tanker dragged them several meters from the spot. “Their heads were crushed under the vehicles. Also, they received life-threatening injuries,” said police. After the incident, a mob gathered there which caused a massive traffic jam at Sector-12 intersection.

Police said a PCR rushed to the spot and brought both students to District Hospital where the doctors declared them brought dead.

Police have identified them through their school uniforms and informed their family members. To avoid any untoward incident, heavy police force was deployed in the district hospital. Police later sent the bodies for postmortem.

An FIR has been registered against the errant tanker driver. “We have registered a case under various sections and have arrested the accused driver. The two students could have survived if they were wearing helmets,” said an official investigating the matter.

Police said Vikash was youngest son in his family while Aashish was the elder son. They were studying in class XI in Government Inter College in Sector 12.
