The Delhi Government is carrying out replacement of 10 expansion joints in two carriageways of the Ashram Chowk flyover which were due for change after completion of their service life. “The existing expansion joints are slab seal type of joints which are now not in practice and not being manufactured by many of the approved vendors.

“Hence, due to excessive gap in adjoining slabs, the decision has been taken to replace them with modular slab seal joints,” said Arun Baroka, Secretary (PWD). The PWD secretary added that the work of replacement of joints started on August 22 and initially the time period planned was four months (two months on each carriageway). It is noted that most of the flyovers in Delhi needs replacement of expansion joints.

The work has been planned to be carried out in half of the carriageway at a time so that traffic can apply on the other half of the carriageway. Since the type of joints has been replaced from slab seal to modular seal joints, it required the removal of slab seal joints totally and even the pocket in the slab was to be increased in size to accommodate new modular seal expansion joints.

By the deployment of additional machineries and increasing the working hour round-the-clock, first half carriageway (DND bound lane) was completed in 16 days.
