The Union Urban Development Ministry will conduct a Swachchh Bharat survey in the city from January 4 to 7, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has said.

The MCG is currently undertaking several efforts to clean the city. The team from the Union Urban Development Ministry will visit some areas in the city to inspect the level of sanitation and on the basis of their report the district will be given a ranking among the 500 chosen for the survey.

The city ranked 466 out of 476 cities in 2015 and 36 out of 73 cities in 2016. Gurugram is one of the 500 cities in the country where the survey will be conducted. The 2017 Swachchh Bharat survey will start on January 4 and public feedback, direct observation and municipal documentation will be taken in consideration, which is why the MCG is taking several steps to gain public support for a good feedback.

“MCG sanitation workers are cleaning the city’s various dirty points for the past several weeks. We just want to do everything to prepare the district for the survey,” said officials.

Earlier, a meeting was held between MCG officials, resident’s welfare associations (RWA) and sanitation associations, in which MCG commissioner Tl Satyaprakash directed MCG officials and the public to work together to improve the city’s cleanliness ranking in the upcoming survey.

“We will put all our efforts to improve district rank. We would like to come in last 24 ranks. Means we want to jump from current rank 36 to 24,” said MCG Commissioner Tl Satyaprakash.

“We will spread more awareness among people about the importance of cleanliness via hoardings and banners, meetings with resident’s associations and public rallies.

“To spread more awareness among people we had started avoid plastic bags campaign which was success across the city,” he added. Sources said that the MCG is also planning to complete the construction of 45 per cent of its proposed public toilets.

The city has only 40 toilets for a population of nearly 10 lakh. The MCG has identified locations for construction of 133 public toilets.

However, only 14 public toilets have been constructed in the city and 44 are under construction.
