The Delhi Government-run hospitals look completely transformed with free medicine scheme, maintenances of infrastructure and hygiene and patients getting adequate medical services.

The Pioneer on Thursday visited GTB hospital, one of the most crowded hospitals in the national Capital, and found the hospital in good health with health services running smoothly. Sharing their experience, hundreds of patients said they were more than satisfied with patient care being accorded top priority.

Though some wanted more things to be improved, most of the patients and visitors appeared satisfied with general hygiene and quality of medical care.

Durga Prasad, a resident of Bhalswas Dairt in outer Delhi, who visited GTB hospital for orthopedic treatment said, “Earlier the corridors in the hospital used to stink with hospitals waste thrown at every corner.  Now there is a perceptible change in the hospitals.”  He was happy that the patients were getting free medicines from the Government.

As patients waited in the queue to get free medicines, pharmacist at the hospital said, “With the increase in the patients every day, the hospital administration has asked the Government to increase the pharmacist strength to cope with the rush of patients.”

GTB Hosptal’s Medical superintendent Dr Sunil Kumar told The Pioneer, “We want the patients coming to the hospital to get the optimum health care. Doctors come on time to attend the patients in the OPD. Medicines stock is sufficient with supplies coming on daily basis. Despite being short-staffed, doctors are coping up with the magnitude of the patients. We have written to the Government to consider the increase in the number of doctors and the para-medical staff.”

On an average, GTB hospital witnesses a footfall of about 5,000-6,000 patients each day in the OPD alone. In order to deal with the rush of the patients, the hospital authorities want structural and infrastructural changes especially in the casualty wing which caters to 800 accident cases on daily basis.

Soon, GTB hospital is coming with new OPD block and round the clock daycare center and renal transplant facility, the MS added.
