Govt rejects NDMC proposal to house elected members

The Union Home Ministry has rejected a resolution passed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) —proposing allocation of houses to its elected members apparently to end AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal’s housing woes.

In a letter to the civic body on Wednesday, the MHA directed the NDMC not to go ahead with the proposal. The proposal was passed on June 20 after Delhi Cantonment MlA Surinder Singh requested for an accommodation when he won the election and became a member of the NDMC.

The resolution ensured allocation of houses in the NDMC area for New Delhi MPs and MlAs and was sent to the Home Ministry for its approval few days ago. “We are not going ahead with the proposal as the Home Ministry has rejected it,” said Jalaj Shrivastava, chairman, NDMC.

MHA rejected the proposal saying that it was against the NDMC Act 2011 which allows allotment of residences to nominated members and not to elected members, officials said. The proposal was seen as an end to the search for a house by Kejriwal who was the former Delhi Chief Minister.
