Govt plans to rejuvenate Yamuna a la UK's Thames

The Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi Government is leaving no stone unturned to achieve its target of Clean Yamuna drive and make the river banks into picnic spots. A top source from Delhi Jal Board (DJB) told The Pioneer that the Government has invited some international players, who have worked for rejuvenating of rivers across the globe. If sources are to be believed, the State Government plans to rejuvenate the Yamuna on the lines of UK’s Thames River, which was once as polluted as the Yamuna having a stretch of about 21kilometres.

“last week the Government had sent invitations to the foreign giants who have experience of revamping the rivers,” said the source, adding the experts from countries such as Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States are invited to share their views and ideas for beautifying the Yamuna River. Moreover, all the civic agencies and the National Green Tribunal (NGT) are coordinating with the DJB to fulfil the objective of the Delhi Government.

Besides, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has been asked to identify the flood-prone areas and its demarcation. “DDA has been asked to recognise the flood-prone low-lying area near the Yamuna and accordingly, all the activities will be planned,” said the source.

Meanwhile, the Government is also working on the issues related to agricultural encroachment and industrial and solid waste being dumped into the river, said the source.

When asked about the inter-State issue of the Yamuna, source said: “The Delhi Government is working on that aspect as well.” In the recent Delhi Budget 2015-16, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced to rejuvenate the Yamuna River into a picnic spot.
