The Delhi Police is mum over the brutal murder of a 48-year-old excise department constable by liquor mafia in South Delhi while Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs1 crore to the next of kin of Vinod Kumar. What is more surprising is the fact that South district Police is treating the murder of the constable as a routine affair. No action has been initiated against fellow police personnel who were accused of abandoning him when attacked by the bootleggers. No action has been initiated against Inspector Ved Prakash, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Vasant Kunj South police station whose role is also under the lens. The buck stops with the SHO and his superior officers for allowing the liquor mafia an unbridled run.
Vinod Kumar, a Delhi Police constable was battered to death by a gang of bootleggers in South Delhi’s Ghitorni area late on Friday night. The police had on Saturday arrested Pawan, one of the bootleggers, who was a part of the gang that killed Kumar.
“Ravinder alias Raban (32) was arrested on Monday. He is Pawan’s friend. There have only been two arrests in the case so far,” said BS Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South).
Sources revealed that on Sunday, police had detained three more persons identified as Sunil, Neetu and Joginder alias Jagga. The trio was on the run after the incident. According to police, the three were held from different areas in South Delhi. Chances of more people being involved are there as well.
In a later development, the Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal addressed a letter to Kumar’s wife Savita on Monday. In the letter Kejriwal expressed his condolence to the family and his inability to meet them due to his illness. Kejriwal also saluted the spirit of martyrdom shown by Kumar and with due respect asked his wife to accept an amount of Rs1 crore as a token. “It is unfortunate that police officials have to sacrifice their lives in the line of duty due to systemic failures. I will be really grateful if I can be of any help for your family,” read Kejriwal’s letter.
