The Arvind Kejriwal Government on Friday decided to form a Society for ‘Excellence in Education’ to devise systems and approaches for improving and sustaining quality in education with emphasis on character building and personality.

The society is an effort in the direction of bridging all social category gaps in the availability of quality education to children up to 18 years age group.

The AAP Government has indentified 10 Government-run schools for this project. This society will involve professionals in education sector for transforming the education imparted in Delhi Government school setup. Five schools — two in Rohini and three in Dwarka, where new buildings are available — have been recognised for initial trainings.

Apart from this, the Kejriwl Government has approved 769 posts of Punjabi teachers and 610 posts of Urdu teachers. As per the Cabinet agenda, the decision to create language teacher posts is to ensure in Government schools will have at least one Sanskrit, Punjabi and Urdu teacher up to secondary level.

At present, out of a total of 1,024 Government schools, including 898 senior secondary, 106 secondary and 20 middle schools, Sanskrit is taught in about 98 per cent schools, while Punjabi and Urdu are taught in about 24 and 25 per cent schools respectively.

However, the present position is that up to Class VIIIth three languages are being taught, and in IXth & Xth classes, only two languages are taught.

The Delhi Education Act, 1973 vide Rule-9 provides for the three language Formula as reproduced below:

“In the teaching of languages in Class VI-X, the three language formula, as adopted by the Central Government, shall be followed.”
