Govt chides IP colleges for 'threatening' protesting students

Taking a serious note of colleges affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University threatening students to deposit arrears and the hike fee and not to protest, the Delhi Government instructed Higher Education Department on Tuesday to ensure that colleges under IP University stop intimidating students.

“It is hereby ordered that Director (Higher Education) may clearly instruct the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIP) university authorities that no private college can take action against any students and any such action will be viewed seriously by the Government and appropriate action would be taken,” said Deputy Chief Minister’s Office direction.

In a note sent to Secretary (High Education) and Director (Higher Education), the deputy CM’s Office has said, “It is the considered opinion of this Government that right to protest and right to dissent are fundamental rights of students and they have every right to meet the CM or the deputy CM and also carry out peaceful protest against any arbitrary fee hike’.

It has been brought to the notice of the Government that protesting students of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University were threatened with rustication and filing of defamation cases by private colleges affiliated with the university. One college continued to threaten students on Monday, for highlighting their agony with the CM. Arvind Kejriwal expressed solidarity with the students over Twitter, promising them full support after students of various colleges protested outside his residence on Sunday, demanding that the order be withdrawn.

A notification was issued last month by Director (Higher Education) Shiv Kumar and he said, “The Government has decided that the fee proposed for 2013-16 by the State Fee Regulatory Committee be notified for 2014-17. And for the courses having duration of four years and five years, the fee notified by the Government will be applicable for the entire duration of the course.”
