Following the arrest of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital’s male staff nurse Bachchu Khan, who allegedly harassed a woman IPS officer, the hospital authorities have sought serious action from the Government against the police for trespassing, violating hospital procedure and damaging essential medical equipment amounting to several thousands of rupees.
On August 1, police officials carrying lathis allegedly barged into the Emergency Ward of the hospital near midnight and forcibly took away Khan who was under medical observation. Khan had been accused earlier in the day of having whistled and passed remarks at a woman IPS officer who was standing in uniform along with four other uniformed policemen near the Emergency area. As per events narrated by the bystanders at the hospital, Khan was later beaten up by the policeman and a case of molestation was registered against him. However, later in the night, when the police decided to arrest Khan, who was kept under medical observation following injuries after the police beat him up, no request was made either to the Medical Superintendant or the Chief Medical Officer in charge of the Emergency to hand over Khan. According to the hospital authorities, both the offices confirmed not having received any request in this regard even though the protocol requires this.
The hospital authorities have also alleged that the police barged into the ward carrying lathis without permission to enter. During the process of taking Khan under custody, the police is said to have pulled away the IV fluid lines and canula and dragged away Khan in a bleeding condition. “The policemen also damaged life saving medical equipment like cardiac monitor and pulse oxymeter leads in the process,” said an official.
