Eight students, including six girls, from a Delhi Government-run school in Bharat Nagar fell ill after allegedly being given folic acid and iron supplement pills under a newly launched Government scheme on Wednesday.
All children were taken to Sundar lal Jain Hospital, from where they were discharged on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-West) P Karunakaran said, “Based on their parents’ complaint, a case was registered under Section 337 (causing hurt) at Bharat Nagar Police Station.” Delhi Health Minister AK Walia said pain in the abdomen and nausea are symptoms documented to be experienced after initial doses of iron and folic acid tablets in about one per cent of total beneficiaries worldwide. "However, in case of Delhi, 0.01 per cent of total beneficiaries have reported these common side effects, which is within acceptable levels." 16 lakh students studying in 1,100 Government schools were given iron supplement pills.
