Delhi University (DU) has directed all its college heads to “cancel” admission of students who get themselves enrolled under sports quota but are “not representing” the university teams in North zone inter-university tournaments opting to play for outside tournaments at national and international level.
“We have found that students who get selected on sports quota avoid playing in the inter-college tournaments by giving excuses of their prior commitments of training and practice for outer competitions which is not acceptable to the university. If the university has given them admission on the sports quota, they must represent the university,” director physical education and sports, DU Dr. Anil Kumar Kalkal told The Pioneer.
Students have been suggested to represent university in all tournaments during their completion of their under-graduate courses.
Kalkal said through the inter-university tournaments, the university would select the best players to represent the varsity at the international tournaments.
“We are avoiding the selection of students through trials. We feel selecting the students while they perform in the inter-university tournaments are better. We can clearly choose the best players,” he added.
In a letter to the colleges and institutes, the university has stated, “It has been observed that the students admitted on the basis of sports are not representing university team in North Zone/All India Inter University Tournaments. As per the undertaking submitted by the students and their parents at the time of admissions, if the student does not represent the university team at such tournaments, his/her admission should automatically be treated as cancelled and such students may not be allowed to appear in the university examination.”
Also, the University Sports’ Council has decided to not allow such students to participate in Delhi University inter-college tournaments. Around 3,500 to 4,000 seats are under sports quota across DU colleges.
