Jung orders speedy restoration of city’s power transmission
In the wake of the ongoing power crisis in the Capital — coupled with protests for the same from all quarters — Delhi’s lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung on Sunday directed the Chief Secretary, senior officers of Power Department and discoms to ensure that all the projects on various lines must be completed within the set deadline. Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Secretary inspected the 220 kV Bawana-Rohini project.
“All the projects to repair, restore and energise various lines so as to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the people of Delhi must be completed well within the deadline set on June 10 in the meeting of the Union Power Minister and l-G,” read a letter issued from the l-G’s office to the Power Department. The work at various project sites continued in full swing even on a Sunday.
Srivastava inspected Bawana-Rohini 220 kV project along with Arun Goyal, Principal Secretary (Power) and other officers. He inspected the progress of the individual towers and directed the project engineers to work 24x7 and ensure completion of the project before the target date.
Due to the cloudy weather, the peak power demand on Sunday afternoon remained below 4,300 MW. “There was no load shedding by the discoms except for technical necessity. Various task forces set up for individual projects are working round the clock to bring back the projects as per the target set in the meeting,” said an official in the Power Department. Senior officers of Delhi Government and Government of India are keeping a close watch and are inspecting the sites and reviewing the projects regularly.
Delhi has been facing long power outages for the past 15 days after the transmission networks were severely damaged during the storm on May 30. Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal had earlier said that it would take another 10 days to restore the transmission network and normalise the supply.
Meanwhile, the Congress has been holding protests, demanding immediate restoration of power supply in the Capital. Even the Aam Aadmi Party lashed out at the ruling BJP for not being able to manage the power scenario in the Capital.
