In a bid to solve cyber-related crime, the Haryana Government on Thursday issued a notification to set up a new cyber crime police station in Gurugram. A separate magistrate will also be appointed for the station. With this new initiative, any cyber offences will be registered at the cyber police station. Gurugram would be the first district of the state with dedicated cyber crime police station.
Presently, cyber crime complaints are currently handled by the cyber Crime Branch (CB) of the Gurugram Police.
As per the police officials, a new post of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) - cyber crime will also be created.
The city has long required a cyber police station due to an alarming increase in the number of cyber crimes in the district over the past few years. “For the local police stations, tackling cyber crimes is a difficult task owing to lack of proper training and technical knowledge.
However, the unique police station comes with trained manpower and modern equipment and software to deal with the new age crimes in the cyber world, a senior police official said.
The building of the new police station has been built and the cyber crime police team has also been shifted to the building.
“A dedicated police station differently help to solve cases soon because many such cases remain pending for investigation and the new initiative will take care of this shortcoming. Soon a separate magistrate will also deploy for the station so that the cases in the station can be filed,” said Ravinder Kumar spokesperson Gurugram Police.
Cyber crime had hit residents hard last year, with 3,286 cases registered by the police as compared to 2,402 in 2016. Cybercrime cases have seen a 36 per cent rise in the city in 2017.
The officials said that in 2017 around 1,954 complaints were related to Online Banking Credit, Debit card fraud and cheating though Mobile while 278 complaints were related to Facebook frauds and several other cases were registered under the Information Technology (IT) Act.
