Police on Thursday seized Rs 5 crore in old currency notes and arrested seven people. Police suspect that a large amount of cash was being moved from Jaipur to Delhi by couriers at the behest of some realtors.
Acting on an information about a large amount of demonetised currency being smuggled out, a team of Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), Palam Vihar led by Inspector Sajjan Singh and consisting of Assistant Sub Inspector Murari, Head Constables Kuldeep, Vikas, and Vinod carried out a raid in Sector-15 and nabbed seven people with the money. They have stashed demonetised notes of Rs 1000 and 500 in plastic boxes, said a senior police officer.
Police team recovered Rs 5 crore in old notes of 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations from the possession of the seven accused people.
Police said the accused were planning to get the currency exchanged. CIA team was monitoring the activities of this gang as they had information about cash being moved to Delhi. Police team mounted surveillance and were waiting for the couriers to bring the cash to their designated place in Gurugram from Jaipur.
Senior officers said they expect more recoveries as the accused are being interrogated. They have identified the kingpin of this gang who was involved in transferring the money from Jaipur to Delhi via Gurugram.
The arrested accused have been identified as Rajiv, Satish, Sandeep, Rajesh all a resident of Delhi, while Dinesh of Nanital, Amit Goyal of Gurugram and Parveen, a resident of Rohtak.
"They have belonged to the Real Estate business. We have informed the Income Tax department about the recovered currency and further investigations are going on," said Sumit Kuhar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime).
"All the accused have been arrested after an FIR was registered against them under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police are trying to find out the source of the demontised currency," the DCP said.
