A 31-year-old doctor working with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) allegedly committed suicide as her doctor husband who worked at the same hospital was purportedly gay and was mentally torturing her. The victim also termed her husband as a ‘devil’ and exonerated his family of any wrong doing.
The deceased, identified as Priya Vedi, an anesthetist at AIIMS was found dead with her wrists slit at a hotel in Paharganj area where she had checked in after a fight with her husband on Saturday.
“A detailed suicide note found on the spot revealed that her husband’s sexual orientation has caused her marriage of five years to sour and left her with immense mental trauma,” said a senior police official.
On the basis of these allegations, police has arrested her husband doctor Kamal Vedi (34), who is a dermatologist in AIIMS from his staff quarter, under Sections 498A and 303B of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The couple had got married five years ago and since then they were staying in AIIMS quarters in South Delhi. Police had received a complaint from doctor Kamal Vedi on Saturday evening that his wife was missing since early morning. It was also being alleged that she was hiding somewhere near Nabi Karim area in Central Delhi.
“Following a complaint, a massive search operation was launched in the area and several hotels in Paharganj area were checked. We came to know that one woman by the name of Priya had checked into Hotel Presidency in Paharganj where she had submitted her ID card,” he added. A police team soon rushed to the hotel and checked room no. 302 and found it locked from inside. When nobody responded after repeated knocking on the door, policemen broke open the door and found her dead in bed in a pool of blood with her wrists slit.
“She had checked into the hotel around 12.30 pm on Saturday. It seems she slit her wrists somewhere late in the night. We have recovered a suicide note from the spot and we have also received a complaint from the victim’s parents,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Parmaditya.
