With the arrest of a gang of women thieves, the Delhi Metro police claimed on Sunday to have solved a case of theft of gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Pankaj Kumar Singh said, "Three women have been arrested. On February 16, we received a complaint from one Gurvinder Singh. Following which a team was formed to crack the case and within a span of 36 hours the arrest was made. These women used to move in groups of three to ten, targeting metro passengers."

In the complaint to police, Singh said it was at the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station that he found that gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 15 lakh was missing from his grey coloured bag.

The officer said during the course of investigation, the complainant told police that he was surrounded by a few women and one of them was carrying a baby in her lap.

"Taking this as a lead, we scrutinised the CCTV cameras of the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station and managed to identify the culprits. The three women — laxmi (30), Karina (25) and Varsha (22) were traced to jhuggis in Kathputli colony near Shadipur. They said they belonged to a village in Maharashtra and have been living in Delhi for the past two to three years. They said after their huts were demolished last year, they started committing theft in the metro stations," said the DCP.

Based on local intelligence, the trio was arrested.
