Gadkari, Sidhu to spearhead Delhi polls

Former BJP president Nitin Gadkari and party MP Navjot Singh Sidhu have been assigned the responsibility of the Delhi unit of BJP on Friday, ahead of the crucial Assembly polls in the Capital.

The announcement was made by the Central leadership late on Friday even as party president Rajnath Singh did not officially appoint either of the two as ‘in-charge’ of the State unit. Gadkari’s appointment as Delhi in-charge was much speculated given the factionalism within the party. Sources said the biggest challenge for Gadkari is to bring together the party leaders and strengthen BJP’s poll prospects.

“leaders of opposing factions within the party had been in favour of Gadkari’s appointment to the post of state in-charge,” said a Delhi BJP leader. Even Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel had expressed his willingness for Gadkari’s appointment. Similarly, the presence of Sidhu, who was not included in Rajnath Singh’s team, is also being considered crucial for the BJP in Delhi. “Given his popularity among the youth and his ability to pull crowd, Sidhu will prove to be a motivating force,” a party leader said.

“I am confident that the experience and dynamism of these two leaders will help all the party cadres immensely,” Goel said.
