The Gurugram Traffic Police has collected Rs 14.54 crore by issuing 86.82 lakh challans till August 2018. In 2017, the traffic police had issued 6.84 lakh challans, collecting Rs 14.06 crore.

The top ten traffic violations include; two lakh challans for Auto, 1.23 lakh for wrong parking, 1.02 lakh for driving without seat belt, 98.773 thousand for triple riding, 72.876 thousand for without helmet, 44.278 thousand for wrong side driving, 17.165 for without driving licence 12.322 thousand for without insurance, 12.130 thousand for without registration certificate and 11.169 thousand for impound vehicles.

Traffic police said the increase in prosecutions for various traffic violations was possible due to sustained and stringent action against the violators and keeping a tab on the frequent violators. Special drives, which were conducted during vulnerable hours on regular basis, have played an important role in nabbing the offenders.

The police have also curbed  drunken driving figures as compared to the previous year. Till August 2018 around 2,837 drunk and driving challans were issued while the figure of such offences was 8,324 last year.

The data also revealed that two-wheeler drivers are responsible for most of the traffic violations, be it rash driving, jumping red lights or riding without helmet. Mostly, the people on two-wheelers are the victims of mishaps.

"To curb the traffic violence in the city we used to organise special drives. We hold several checkpoints and given the strict order to the traffic personnel to mark their presence effectively and also time to time the traffic police carry out awareness campaigns to curb traffic violations, DCP (traffic), Sulochana Gajraj said.

Officials say normally the Gurugram traffic police issue spot fines to around 3,500 vehicles in a day.

However, during the specials drive the numbers of vehicles against which challenged was issue cross more than 20,000.

In the past few months, however, the traffic police have been focusing particularly on offences that cause fatal accidents.

"The traffic police organised awareness rally to spread awareness of traffic rules and regulations. Our traffic cops deployed to catch violators who break rules on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, as maximum accidents take place there. Our main goal is to reduce fatalities on the road," she said.
