Students of second year who were admitted in Delhi University under the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP) are now at an advantage as the university has recently altered some of its examination rules for that batch. Students can now reappear for subjects in which they have fared badly even though they have a pass degree. This provision was not available under FYUP. However, to the students’ benefit, their minimum attendance of 40 per cent is still as per FYUP rules unlike the rules under the three-year semester system of 66.7 per cent as minimum attendance.
The Deputy Registrar of Academics Ram Dutt issued a notice in this case a week back, which said that “Ordinance IX (7) (2) with regard to reappearance in passed papers will now also be applicable to the students initially admitted in the erstwhile FYUP.”
While this clause was always there in the three-year semester system, it wasn’t applicable to those under FYUP. “Under FYUP, students could not reappear for a paper if they had passed it in order to improve their marks. This would leave students with the same marks that they scored in the first go. However, students in the three-year semester system were applicable to reappear in these exams. Thus, the Executive Council in its last meeting decided to let these students get that option as well,” said an official in the university.
Meanwhile, the clause of attendance under FYUP has not been changed. University officials said that it was the Principal Committee’s decision to keep the minimum attendance 40 per cent unlike the one under the three-year course. “The reasons for this decision are not clear, however, it was a consensual decision made by the entire committee, which was managing the migration of students from FYUP to the three-year semester system,” said the official.
Students of second year can appear for examinations with an attendance of 40 per cent and have a chance of bettering their marks as well.
