Gangster Anwar Thakur from whose house in Pandav Nagar police had recovered a large cache of weapons on Independence Day was arrested in South Delhi on Tuesday evening. A team of Special Task Forces, South nabbed Anwar (41) after it laid a trap on Barapullah Road.
Police had got a tip-off that Anwar will come to Gurgaon from Meerut via Barapullah Road in a white Alto car. He was intercepted by a police team around 7:30 pm. One .32 bore loaded automatic pistol was recovered from his possession.
“Thakur was out on parole from Tihar Jail where he was lodged after he was convicted for life in a murder case. He was also wanted in a recent case where five automatic pistols, three country-made pistols and around 100 cartridges recovered from his house in Pandav Nagar following his wife’s tip-off,” said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) PS Kushwaha. He is a known criminal from Meerut and a one-time associate of Fazl-ur-Rehman, also in jail. Rehman is alleged to be a close associate of Dawood Ibrahim.
According to police, Anwar was released on parole on May 5 for one month. His parole was extended twice for one month and 15 days respectively. He was supposed to surrender on August 22. Fearing an attack during parole, he had procured huge cache of ammunitions and kept it all at his rented house at P-50, Pandav Nagar, where he stayed with his wife.
On August 15, he had a quarrel with his wife who then made a call to police and tipped them off about the weapons. Thakur, however had managed to escape from the house.
