With just two days left for electioneering, the BJP is switching on to a “mega outreach” mode. Apart from the rallies by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Union Ministers, the party is set to take up aggressive campaigning for the February 7 Assembly polls by sending personal letters to the 1.20 crore voters of the national Capital.
In what could be billed as the biggest-ever exercise, the party is going to send letters addressed to the head of every family to each household. The letter details development work done by the Modi Government in the last eight months. It also lists BJP’s plans for Delhi, if it is voted to power. These include safety for women, a corruption-free city, 24-hour power supply, potable water, good roads, better facilities in all government schools, and accountability of all government officials. The letter ends with an appeal to voters to vote for the “lotus” symbol.
A BJP first, the party aims to deliver these letters at voters’ homes by Thursday, two days before polling is held in Delhi. Each letter will have pictures of the PM, the party’s presumptive Chief Minister Kiran Bedi and the local candidate. The BJP has since late last week ratcheted up its Delhi campaign, with party chief Amit Shah deploying a giant army of 250 party leaders, including Ministers and lawmakers to campaign in the city.
The PM addressed two rallies in two days over the weekend and will address two more, while the senior leaders are busy with Press conferences and other rallies. The party is also targeting putting up 1,000 posters in every constituency in its campaign blitz to counter the Aam Aadmi Party’s Arvind Kejriwal, who BJP has marked as the man to beat ion Delhi.
The BJP was four short of a majority in the last assembly elections held 13 months ago and is aiming at a comfortable majority. Arvind Kejriwal insists that is but a fond dream in one of the most bitterly-fought elections of recent times. Delhi votes for its 70-seat Assembly on February 7. Votes will be counted on February 10.
