With the new academic session in DU beginning from Wednesday, freshers, mostly in the age group of 17-19 years, are making a beeline for the city’s aestheticians and cosmetic dermatologists to enhance their looks through non-surgical treatments.
Be it perfect nose, lips or smooth complexion, the girls are doing it all. Just out of her school a 17-year-old Swati Nagar is excited to look her best on the first day of her college. “I don’t see any harm in getting a treatment done for enhancing my looks. Today, everybody flaunts their best feature in colleges, you often go for hangouts with your friends and you want to look cool and happening. I got my lips enhanced because I too was bothered about their thinness and I know if I am always fussing about their shape and size then I won’t be able to enjoy my college life,” Nagar said.
According to Simal Soin, an established Dermatologist in Vasant Kunj who receives lots of such cases in his clinic, Three Graces mostly youngsters are nervous and bothered about their pigmentation, bulgy stomach and other face related details. “Procedures like nose jobs, lip augmentation, liposuction are fairly common these days. A lot of young girls come to us for getting lip enhancement. The dermal filler procedure is really simple and quick. Modern day fillers such as Juvederm are more used as they give instantaneous results,” he said. He also underlined the fact that since these are hyaluronic-acid based, which is a natural component of the skin they don’t cause any side effects. “The best part is that the results are so natural looking that one doesn’t come across as being artificially made up,” Soin added, emphasising on the aspect of cosmetic enhancements being famous among both girls and boys. “The high feeling that comes from good looks under peer pressure is as common among boys as it is among the girls. We do see college-going boys coming for procedures such as male breast reduction by liposuction and Botox treatment for excessive sweating. They start it in the intial days and come back after joining various clubs, doing modelling in college fests and performing in various art forms,” Soin said.
Indu Ballani of the Dermatech at Defence Colony also has an experience of dealing with young clients and she is of the opinion that the treatments are much advanced and do not have any major side-effects but warns that they must visit a trustworthy authorised dermatologist. “These things are getting common slowly and we as a society are learning and our lifestyle is also changing. People are more concious of their looks and so are the children as they get out of school. These treatments are not very painful except few days of swelling, rest they just need to follow their doctors advice. The costs are also manageable and parents also are supportive as their concerns are also on similar lines, everyone wants to be the eye catcher,” Ballani added.
