In a bid to get rid of traffic snarls on outskirts of the Capital, the Delhi Government will be constructing an elevated road of 2.6 kilometre connecting Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk on Outer Ring Road in North West Delhi.

To be built at the cost of Rs 423 crore, the foundation stone for the project was laid by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Sunday. The upcoming corridor will be a four-kilometre long stretch of which the elevated corridor will be a part. The elevated stretch will start before Som Vihar Chowk and intersect at various important junctions like Pitampura Police line Chowk, Rohini T Junction, Deepali Chowk and Saraswati Vihar T Junction, making them signal free. “This project will also benefit nearby villages and provide facilities like signal-free movement of traffic from Mangolpuri to Madhuban Chowk,” Dikshit said.

Also addressing a rally at Kanjhawala link near Mangolpuri, Dikshit announced public facilities including one new foot-over-bridge for pedestrians near Saraswati Vihar, bus lanes, green belt, footpath, cycle track and rainwater harvesting in the area. Dikshit said the city Government has not only provided Rs 1,500 crore for giving new look and strength to 647 roads with combined length of 802 km transferred from the MCD but has also sanctioned an amount of Rs 2,200 crore for the development of an entire corridor from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad to make it signal-free with construction of seven flyovers and elevated roads. This signal-free section from Vikaspuri to Wazirabad would be further integrated with the Signature Bridge which is going to become a new landmark in the Capital.

The Chief Minister appreciated the work being carried out by the PWD. “Delhi has witnessed the biggest infrastructural development by Public Works Department (PWD). With the aim to change the face of Delhi, we bring to you an elevated stretch for a hassle-free ride from the congested Mangolpuri area to Madhuban Chowk,” she said.

Dikshit also took a dig at the Opposition BJP saying power supply in the Capital was poor during BJP’s rule whereas her Government has ensured round the clock power supply to all in the city. The event was also attended by Union Minister and Chandni Chowk MP Kapil Sibal, Delhi PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, and Delhi Education Minister Kiran Walia among others, who supported the project with vigour.

Sibal lauded said the Sheila Dikshit Government saying the city has witnessed immense infrastructural leap during her 15-year rule. “The Delhi Government has been doing a commendable work. The Chief Minister’s efforts speak louder than words as we can see that the city has witnessed unprecedented development in last 15 years. The pace with which the capital is developing, the city is not far from becoming the best place to live in,” Sibal said.

PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said, “We are committed to make Delhi one of the most developed cities in the world. Every road in this city will have sign boards, lights and footpaths. PWD will alone spend around Rs 5,000 crore on making roads wide and smooth.”
