A 19-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Thursday afternoon in North Delhi’s Civil lines. The cause of suicide has not been ascertained but preliminary investigation reveal the victim, Sangeeta, was unhappy with her parents’ decision to get her married. Her family alleges foul play saying the five litre jerrican of kerosene Sangeeta doused herself with is not theirs. Police have not recovered a suicide note as yet.
Police said that Sangeeta was earlier pursuing a correspondence course but had recently given it up. The incident came to light on Thursday afternoon around 1.30 pm when a Police Control Room received a call from the victim’s mother that her daughter had set herself on fire inside her room at their residence in Majnu ka Tila. “The victim was taken to a nearby hospital but she had already succumbed to her burns,” said a senior police officer, adding the post-mortem was conducted on Friday morning and the viscera preserved.
Initial investigation reveals that at the time of the incident, the victim’s mother was present at home. After a heated argument with her mother, Sangeeta locked herself up in her room and set herself ablaze. “A few weeks ago, her family members had decided to get her married off and she was unhappy with their decision,” the officer added. Sangeeta’s father has a bookstall at New Delhi Railway Station; she has three siblings, two brothers and a sister.
