Food dept gears up ahead of fest

The Delhi Food Department has decided to check quality of Cadbury's chocolates and handmade milk sweets during the ensuing festive season. The food inspectors are likely to pick random samples of sweets in the run up to Raksha Bandhan.

Speaking to The Pioneer, the official of the Food Safety department said: "During the festive season, sweet makers often use low standard dairy products, therefore we plan to check quality of the products. Even Cadbury's chocolates and other chocolate brands are under the lens", the official further said.

The Food Department will check if the ingredients in the samples meet the prescribed parameters under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Besides, packed food such as pulses, milk products, mineral water and energy drinks are on the radar as well, the official said. "About 80 to 90per cent of people in Delhi are dependent on the packed food," the official said.

It may be recalled that Delhi Government has banned Nestle India's Maggi noodles in the Capital and the ban has been extended till the Government takes any decision in this regard.

"The ban will continue until the new products of Nestle Maggi undergo a quality test at Delhi Government laboratories." If the products meet the approved standards, only then the Government will allow Nestle to re-launch their products in the city, the official added.
