Flyovers, underpass to ease traffic in Gurugram

Published on:

The Gurugram administration expects traffic congestion in the city will ease off once the ongoing construction of flyovers and the underpass at four major intersections is completed on time.

Iffco Chowk, Signature Tower, Maharana Pratap Chowk and Rajiv Chowk are the major intersections of the city where constructions work is going on in full swing.

The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) hopes to wrap up

the multi-crore project by March next year.

According to officials, the inauguration of Maharana Pratap Chowk flyover and underpass connecting Medanta with Delhi-Gurugram Expressway will be throw open for the public on August 14.

Meanwhile, the authority has already opened the flyover at Hero Honda on July 24. The underpasses will be completed by December 31.

NHAI is constructing three underpasses in the city’s major points. Two underpasses will divert traffic from Sohna road towards Civil lines, the other on Bakhtawar Singh road that will directly connect vehicles onto the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.

Besides that two four-lane unidirectional flyovers have been proposed on both sides of Iffco Chowk, the busiest intersection of the city, on the expressway. This will facilitate a U-turn for traffic coming from the directions of Delhi and Jaipur.

Another four-lane flyover has been proposed at IFFCO Chowk, parallel to the existing flyover, for signal-free passage to traffic coming from Delhi and going towards Maharana Pratap Chowk.

“The construction of the underpasses and flyovers will be done as per the plan. Authorities are in coordinating with civic body, police and another department to avoid any jams,” Ashok Sharma, Project Director, Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, said.

Apart from this the NHAI and the State Government are also planning to widen the service lanes of the National Highway to ease traffic congestion.

The two-lane 18 km stretches of service lane on either side of the expressway from Sirhaul to Kherki Daula will be upgraded to four lanes.

Furthermore, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the 5.5 km elevated corridor on the Gurugram-Alwar highway is almost ready. The project will start from Subhash Chowk and go beyond Badshahpur village on the stretch, also known as National Highway 248A. The entire cost of the project, including construction of the elevated road and road widening till Alwar would be around 1,380 crores, an official, said.

The move will especially benefit Sectors 33, 66 and 67, Islampur, Badshahpur, Bhondsi, Jharsa, Sohna and Fazilpur. The corridor will also benefit the commuters going to Sohna or Nuh, Palwal or Alwar, who now have to face heavy traffic jam on this stretch during peak hours.

Sohna road is a part of Sohna-Alwar Highway and more than 45,000 vehicles travel every day on the stretch. The elevated road project is expected to start by August this year. Huda had handed over Sohna road to PWD in 2012. And in August 2016, NHAI had declared the stretch from Rajiv Chowk till Naugaon at the Haryana-Rajasthan border a national highway.
