Flyers' safety overrides laser shows near IGIA

After the pilots of the various airlines wrote to Air Traffic Controller about laser lights in the vicinity of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), the authorities have directed the organisers of social functions to stop laser show as that is creating hurdles for the pilots during landing of aircraft.

Delhi International Airport limited (DIAl), the company responsible for running the Terminal-3 and Terminal-1 of the IGIA, has requested the District Magistrate (DM) New Delhi and DM South West to address the issue at the earliest.

Acting swiftly on the DIAl request, the South West District administration (SWDA) on Friday prohibited the use of laser lights in fiesta and public gatherings. This has been done to avoid any type of mishap while landing and talking off the airplane on the runway due to the distraction to pilots.

The SWDA has issued the directions to organisers of such functions as well as owners of the venues adjoining the IGIA in banning the use of laser lights.

Concerned about the safety and security of the passengers, the DM of South West Delhi Ankur  Garg said: "We cannot allow any activity which causes any confusion or difficulty to pilots as the safety of the passengers in the flight is the paramount," adding that the strict actions will be taken against the defaulters.

Any violation of the order in this regard, would be punished under the section 188 of IPC, in which the culprit would be put into jail for six months and a fine in case of disobedience, said Garg.

Earlier, it has been noted that use of laser lights in farm houses, hotels and party venues near the IGI airport, has created problems for pilots in landing and taking off the planes. The villages that have been notified are Mundhela Kalan, Issapur, Jaffarpur Kalan, Bakkargarh and Mitroan in Najafgarh sub-division and Kapashera, Chhawla, Bijwasan, Bharthal, Bamnoli, Paprawat, Khurd, Raghour, Jhatipra, Kanganheri and Salahpur in Kapashera sub-division. Also, all the SHO's of the area have been informed and alerted to keep the check on the same.
