Flicker of power? Govt to pull plug on discoms for outages

Published on:

With people of Delhi having to face the brunt of frequent unscheduled power cuts in this sweltering heat, State Power Minister Satyendra Jain on Friday announced that the AAP Government will penalise power discoms if they resort to ad-hoc power cuts.

Notably, the Delhi Government doesn’t have any jurisdiction to penalise the discoms since only Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has the power and authority to take action against them.

A resident of Mayur Vihar, Amit Gupta, told The Pioneer that such power cuts make the AAP’s poll promise for lesser power

tariffs futile. “This summer, the power cuts are becoming more and more

frequent. While the Government boasts of reducing power tariffs, it has failed to provide uninterrupted power supply. If this continues, we are willing to pay full price for power,” he said.

The announcement by the Delhi Government comes amid frequent power cuts across Delhi over the last few weeks. Residents of Neb Sarai, laxmi Nagar, Rohini, Darya Ganj, Mayur Vihar and many other localities have reported of power cuts

ranging from two to six hours a day.
