Five-year-old girl dies at Chacha Nehru hospital, father alleges negligence

In a case of alleged negligence on part of doctors in providing proper treatment at State-run Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, five-year-old girl Shagun died on Tuesday after her family took her for a minor wound treatment. The girl had suffered injuries on her abdomen while playing with her friends. Her family alleged that it was a minor injury and that could not have caused the death of their child. They accused the doctors for adopting careless attitude and neglecting in providing treatment to their daughter.

Shagun’s father Dayaram said, “On last Friday evening, my daughter was injured while playing with her friends. Next day, she started vomiting and complained of stomach-ace. Therefore, we took her to the Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya for the treatment on Saturday.”

According to her father, initially doctors at the emergency ward said there was nothing to worry about; they did not see anything serious in the patient. “Till Sunday, no doctor came to see my daughter and on Monday, she was put on intravenous (IV) medication. Till that time, my daughter was completely fine,” he said.

Her condition started deteriorating with her stomach getting abnormally swollen. The child was supposed to be operated on Monday itself, but doctors delayed it for one more day, said Dayaram.

“I don’t understand if doctors said that my daughter is fine, then why her condition became critical after they provided drip to her. There was no sign of worry in the ultrasound reports as well,” said Shagun’s father.

Had the doctors paid attention to my daughter, she would have been alive today, the girl’s father said. However, the hospital’s director, Dr Anoop Mohta, denied the allegations adding, “The patient was given optimum treatment but unfortunately, she could not be saved.”
