Fireworks at DU premature?

Before the Delhi University could officially declare its compliance to the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) order, to scrap the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) already conducted a victory procession in North Campus on Monday.

The BJP-backed student union had premature celebrations with firecrackers and colour. The procession started just before noon when the university made changes to its website by removing the term ‘FYUP’ from all its admission related information.

From August last year, ABVP has been actively voicing their opinion against FYUP. However, it was only after the new Government was formed that their movement against the programme gained momentum. Members of the union, including Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president Aman Awana, met Minister of Human Resource Development Smriti Irani for the revocation of FYUP. Thus, the implementation of this comes as a big victory for them.

National Secretary Rohit Chahal said, “We are glad that the UGC has finally made sure that the change takes place. The welfare of students is all we want and with this the students will benefit the most.”Though ABVP is already celebrating, there is still no clarity on admissions so far. Students will probably have to wait before they take admissions into a college.

However, State Secretary Saket Bahuguna said that even if students have to wait for a few days till admissions begin, it is fine. “This change has come in the higher interest of students. Thus, if the cutoff lists are released a few days later it is fine. At least that way the admissions won’t be held in a haphazard manner.”

Meanwhile, no other student union, apart from ABVP, was seen in the campus celebrating the roll back despite being an active participant in the protest.
