In a tragic incident, two resident doctors and a nursing officer suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out on Thursday afternoon at eye operation theatre on fourth floor in the new OPD building of Safdarjung Hospital.
According to a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official, around 12 pm on Thursday seven fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the flames were doused within half an hour. "We suspect overheating of spirit (chemical) as the cause of the fire," said DFS official.
Acting on the incident the hospital administration has also constituted an enquiry committee to probe the incident. "During a routine eye surgery at around 12 noon, a fire incident occurred due to the spirit swab getting a fire accidentally. The patient suffered no harm but three persons, a PG resident doctor (26), a senior resident doctor (30) and a nursing officer (33), received thermal injuries," said Dr Rajendra Sharma, medical superintendent, Safdarjang hospital.
In another fire incident on Wednesday night, a man was killed and another was injured after a fire broke out at a godown in Mori Gate.
"The deceased are identified as Rajender (40) and the injured was identified as Yogesh (24) in a fire incident at Mori gate. A fire broke out on the ground floor of the godown where the victims were engaged in welding work, said Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), north district.
According to DFS official, they received a call at 8:50 pm on Wednesday regarding a fire in a godown in Mori Gate area following which four fire tenders were rushed to the spot. "The fire was brought under control by 10 pm," said a DFS official.
"The godown houses automobile spare parts. During the process to douse the flames two persons injured were rescued. Both the victims were rushed to a nearby hospital where Rajendra succumbed to injuries while Yogesh is being treated for burn injuries and is currently under observation," said the DCP.
"We have arrested the owner of the godown in connection with the incident and a case has been lodged. Further investigation is going on to find out the reason for fire in the godown," said the DCP.
