Finding suitable PG Herculean task

Published on:

Outstation students, who have managed to secure a seat at the prestigious Delhi University colleges, are yet to combat another hurdle — finding a suitable PG accommodation.

As per DU’s website, only 14 out of the 64 colleges provide residential facilities for students. The university also has two off-campus hostels for students — International Students House for Women (for International students only) and Under Graduate Hostel for Girls. However, this is not enough to house a large number of outstation students, who seek admission every year.

Owing to the limited seats and admission on the basis of merit, many are left with no other option than to look for private accommodation. North Campus is surrounded with many PG options in popular locations like Kamla Nagar, GTB Nagar, Roop Nagar, Civil lines and Model Town. However, on the south side of the university, it is relatively tough to find a decent PG that caters to the needs of the students. Satya Niketan, lajpat Nagar and GK are the only areas where one can find a good PG with nice facilities.

Choosing a suitable PG is a big headache for the students as they have to keep several parameters in mind such as distance from the college, safety and their budgets among others.

For Gurmeet Dhillon, a third year student, the hunt for PG that met all his requirements was not easy. “I had to do several rounds of various PG accommodations before finalising one at Roop Nagar where I now live with 2 roommates,’’ he said.
