Final nail in DU Registrar's coffin

Hitting the final nail in the coffin, the Government has cancelled the extended period of deputation of Delhi University’s Registrar Alka Sharma. In a letter issued on Wednesday, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said, “The appointments committee of the Cabinet has approved the proposal for cancelling the extended period of deputation and premature repatriation of Alka Sharma.”

Sharma is from the 1988 batch of the Indian Defence Accounts Service (IDAS) and was sent on deputation to DU as finance officer. Sharma joined the university in 2006 and has been on deputation since then without a break. However, after the controversy over the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP), the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) had written to the DoPT on July 8 and asked the Government to call her back to her cadre in the Ministry of Defence.

Sharma’s term was supposed to end in January this year, but as per an RTI response her deputation was extended from January 2, 2014 to July 2015. However, now, Sharma would have to head back to her cadre under all circumstances. The teachers and students had expressed strong discontentment on Sharma’s conduct and had appealed to the Government for her removal. “It is a big relief for the University community. Instead of upholding act, statues and ordinances, Alka Sharma was instrumental in misgovernance,” said Abha Dev, a DU professor.
