Few takers for some DU UG courses

Published on:

Contrary to the popular Undergraduate (UG) courses like B.A  Programme & BCom (Hons) etc at Delhi University (DU) in which more than thousand have taken admission against the first cut-off, courses like Bachelor of Vocational (BVoc) Software

Development, BA (Hons) Spanish and BSc Applied Physical Sciences with Analytical Methods in Chemistry & Biochemistry have only lone takers.

While in the other less popular courses like BSc (Hons) Instrumentation and BSc (Hons) Polymer Science only 3 and 4 admissions have taken place against the first cut-off.

On the other hand among the merit based undergraduate (UG) courses, B.A Programme tops the chart followed by B.Com (Hons), B.A. (Hons) Political Science, B.A (Hons) History and B.Com successively with more than thousand admissions in each of these courses.

A DU official on the condition of anonymity said that vocational courses cater to the requirement of job markets and have more ‘employability’ as compared to the traditional courses but “ironically” there are very few or almost no takers for it.

B.Voc. Programme has been designed by the UGC as per National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) of Ministry of Skill Development emphasizing on skill-based education in consultation with National Skills Development Corporation (NSDC).

“The programme focuses on skill development based higher education leading to Bachelor of Vocational (B.Voc.) degree with multiple entry and exit points.

Its objective is to provide judicious mix of skills relating to a profession and appropriate content of general education, so that they are work- ready at each exit point of the programme.

It also integrates NSQF within the undergraduate level of higher education in order to enhance employability of the graduates and meet industry requirement,” said the DU Official.

Also, there are many DU colleges that are not very popular and very few admissions have taken place in these colleges against first cut-off. Dyal Singh College (Evening) is at the bottom of the chart with only 2 admissions against the first cut-off.

Fairing a little better and second from the bottom is Sri Aurobindo College (Evening) with 6 admissions.

“Almost 15,000 admissions have taken place with students paying their fees. 1000 more have been approved .

As principals are still approving the admissions and uploading it on portal we have extended the timing till 6 pm on Friday. While the students can pay their fee till 12 pm on Saturday,” said Prof. Maharaj K Pandit, Chairman, admission committee, DU. However with four more “realistic” cut-offs yet to come up, the number of admissions in these least sought out courses and colleges is expected to rise though not much.

The second cut-off will be announced on Monday 25 June while the admissions against the second cut-off would be made in between 25 to 27 June.

The third cut-off will come on 30 June, fourth on 6 July and fifth and the last on 12 July.
